South Hobart Yoga & Meditation

People of all ages and levels of fitness or flexibility are welcome at SHYAM. Teachers are trained in Satyananda Yoga, meditation and mindfulness. Each class blends postures, breathing techniques, relaxation and meditation.

Yoga helps you to be strong, flexible and healthy, physically, mentally and emotionally. It gives you practical tools to manage life, enhancing positivity, overall wellbeing and potential. Yoga is concerned with the human spirit, the subtle part of each person that is a wellspring of inspiration, positivity and resilience.

Arriving at SHYAM

Leela Walford
Owner & teacher at SHYAM

Leela experienced and fell in love with the healing and holistic quality of Satyananda Yoga in her early 30s. She lived at the Satyananda Yoga Ashram for 4 years whilst completing the 3-year Diploma of Yogic Studies and Teacher Training.  Leela then taught at Hobart Yoga & Meditation Centre before travelling to India where she lived at the Bihar School of Yoga for 4 years. Immersed in ashram life, Leela's training continued while serving the community and teaching. Returning to Hobart, Leela teaches yoga and meditation classes, workshops and retreats. In every class or session, whilst the practices may differ, the underlying aim is to provide the space for people to feel connected, to release tensions, to feel renewed and relaxed.

Inspired by Tara Brach’s book Radical Compassion and fuelled by a desire to keep learning and growing, Leela completed Tara Brach & Jack Kornfield’s 2-year Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Certification Program.  The practices cultivate both mindfulness and heartfulness so that these two qualities blossom in life.

Where is SHYAM?

SHYAM students love our yoga room - it's in an historic sandstone building that has always been a place for education and community. Built in 1895 as the original South Hobart Primary School, it later became an Adult Education centre. In 2017 it re-opened as SOHO Arts, providing facilities for the arts, culture and community activities.

Conveniently situated on the corner of Weld and Macquarie Streets, with onsite parking, it has a peaceful and gracious atmosphere, perfect for yoga and meditation.
